Color theory schtuff

Postby jeska on Wed Jan 16, 2008 3:16 pm

Anybody know a good resource for learning about this? I really need to tighten up on my color knowledge, I've got a good wheel, but would like to find a great book that speaks in layman's terms?

Ha ha I don't know, but if you find the right book you better share with the group. I want to read it, too.

The only color theory I know how to use I learned from a coworker who graduated from Savannah's art institute. I just pick his brain. Some of it, I don't even grok, but I'll emulate it until I get it.
I've seen a million faces, and I've rocked them all.

I wish I could be more specific. I just know that I'll look at certain pics and such and I can tell there's 'more than meets the eye' with the coloring, I just can't figure out how.
But whatever it is produces a fricking beautiful end result.
I suck at explaining stuff like that. :?

Thanks for responding, though.

Ok since I don't have a book and you don't have a particular question....you post a pic that you would like the color broken down, And I'll go through how the color is working in it......kind of like a "forum class"

I have a book I purchased at an art supply store, geared toward painting called "Exploring Color" by Nita Leleand. it has examples of expercises, and mixes, palates, values and hues. some of the art could be better but it gets the idea across visually as well as theoretically. I think for us visual folks a picture is worth a thousand words. I also subscribe to "Artists magazine" that has show and tell articles on how some pieces were achieved and the thought process behind some really nice stuff. Both get the gears turning and can be applied to tattoo. One great tool that has helped me find the lightest points in a color piece is to turn it into a black and white so the values are obvious. sometimes it is unclear in a piece that has alot of similar hues in different colors. This is the same as holding up a tinted piece of plastic (like sunglasses) to a still life to see where your highlights and lowlights are.
I think it's a great idea to pose specific questions about color and see what comes up. I think we may all have some ideas the others hadn't thought of, it could help us all freshen up our approach for sure :)

A lot of times, right before I finish a tattoo, I take a snap of it with the digital camera. it lets me edit it to black and white in the display on the back, and I can tell then if I need to hit up the black a little before I'm finished...you can use photoshop to do this with artwork too.

I picked up the Betty Edward's book on mastering the Art of Mixing Colors. So far so highly decent. It speaks in English, and I've learned some good tidbits. I liked her Right Brain drawing book, so I thought to check this out.
Would definitely recommend it.

I can't seem to find an appropriate place in any of my posts to insert this emoticon, so I'll just do it here, all random like.
