MY DAD RETIRED....

Postby NYTA2RTIST on Tue Aug 25, 2009 5:02 pm

Which is a good thing, he worked 30 years as a graphic artist , mostly for himself. Graphic meaning computer generated art, labels and shit like that. All advertising. I used to work for him right out of school, but fled the scene when computers came in hot and heavy. I wanted to draw and paint and ended up TATTOOING!! Well, 17 years later I own my own shop and love what I do...

So Dad think he wants to try it now. AAAck. Too much Miami Ink for him . I have been trying to gently explain that it isn't easy and he hasn't put his hand to paper in like forever. I keep telling him to draw something and I would consider him doing something on me, for nostalgic reasons. I know for sure he can't see shit, and really can't draw anything anymore...the last painting he did was from high school. Now he's pushing me for him to color an outline I have on me...um, no way!

I don't want to hurt his feelings, but he's 62, overweight, biker-type guy I love to death, but I wouldn't want him in the shop. Not even to answer phones ): I got a girl thing going on and unless he all of a sudden was like a Paul Booth, it ain't happening.

He gets offended saying where do I think my talent comes from, and why do I discredit computer art. I understand it, but unless you can shit something on paper, the old fashioned way, it doesn't count to me in this field. :bang:

How do I let him down easy...?

Yikes! That does put you in a pretty lame spot. Maybe you can just say that you couldn't afford to hire another artist without taking away business from the artists that are already there? Make it more about your shop than about you or him.
I've seen a million faces, and I've rocked them all.
